For almost four years, Kate provided care for her late spouse Derek Draper, who became her husband in 2005, as he fought against Covid-19 after being hospitalised due to the illness.
Derek died at the age of just 56 in January 2024. Following his death, Kate has maintained her role on ITV’s Good Morning Britain and is presently featuring on The Celebrity Traitors with stars including Celia Imrie and Alan Carr.

Discussing her experience on the programme with Prima, Kate disclosed the beneficial effects.
She commented: “The process was fun, intense and eye-opening. It was a rollercoaster. It was also a wonderful time to do some thinking of my own.
“No phones, access to the internet or live TV were allowed, and my wonderful sister-in-law was with the kids. So I could distract myself from the worries of the past few years and immerse myself in game play but also take stock and let my mind wander and dream about the next chapter of my life.”
Kate additionally elaborated on her connection with Derek approaching two years since his death, acknowledging she continues to feel mindful of not disappointing him.
She shared: “As for my relationship with Derek as a wife, rather than within the family, I feel his voice is in my head a lot. I’m very conscious of not letting him down, but I also know that he would be very proud of all of us.”

Kate has openly discussed her relationship with Derek, the father of her two children, and whether she will consider dating again.
In a conversation with The Sun, Kate confessed that while she doesn’t envision living the rest of her life without love, the idea of dating feels odd at present.
She revealed to the newspaper: “I don’t feel as if I can. It’s weird one, because I wouldn’t like to think I’d spend the rest of my life without love, but also it feels preposterous at the moment to think of being with anyone else. What Derek and I loved was our home life and just pottering around, and we had 21 years of that, so mentally I am still in that zone.
“However, I do realise that, when the time is right, I am not to meet someone in my living room, so I am going to have to think about the future at some point.”
The December 2025 issue of Prima is available from 29 October.
