Lewisham Council have announced 1,000 cheaper tickets for the first Blackheath fireworks event in years.

Tickets for families on a low income will be available with a 25 per cent discount.

Tickets will be distributed through the Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programme who receive benefits-related free school meals.

Those who are eligible should receive a unique booking code via the Council’s HAF partners and tickets allocated on a first come, first served basis.

First in six years

After a number of years away the fireworks will return for the first time since 2019 but is no longer free.

Standard prices aren’t cheap at £17.85 with booking fee for adults, £11.25 for 10 to 15-year-olds, £6 for under-10s and family tickets starting from £44.25. That’s a bit steep and too much for me and I suspect plenty others. As a non-Lewisham borough resident it’s a no go.

Fireworks will launch around 8pm though other events will be held including live music, DJs, a singalong, comedy acts and a funfair. Skiddle are behind the event.

Total visitor numbers are expected to be around 30,000. A heads up that Blackheath station will see reduced Southeastern railway services due to engineering work.

Long gone are the days when you could rock up for free and in my family’s case on packed out 53 buses. As with so many things, cuts halted the event which hasn’t been held since 2019.
