He may be one of the co-owners of Championship outfit Wrexham, but Ryan Reynolds is under the same guidelines as the players when it comes to obeying Phil Parkinson’s celebrity rule. It’s been almost five years since Reynolds and Rob Mac assumed ownership of the Welsh outfit – and what a journey they’ve enjoyed since then.

Under their stewardship, Wrexham have been promoted in three consecutive seasons, leading to the club reaching the second tier of English football and securing Championship status for the 2025/26 campaign for the first time in over 40 years.

The attention that comes with being owned by Reynolds and Mac sees a number of celebrity visitors at the Racecourse Ground including the likes of David Beckham, Channing Tatum, Will Ferrell and more.

The hit FX series ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ only contributed to the buzz around the area and the football club, which was also visited by King Charles III and Queen Camilla in December 2022. It’s an occurrence that certainly took some getting used to by the team, according to ex-Wrexham striker Ollie Palmer.

It may be easy to get lost in the glitz and glamour that has surrounded the football club but Palmer paid tribute to Parkinson’s no-nonsense rules when it comes to attention potentially being taken away from the actual football side of things.

Speaking on CBS Sports earlier this year, he said: “I know it sounds arrogant or it sounds ridiculous, but I’ve been there since the start. So you do get used to it. But I know it’s not normal. I know it’s an amazing experience.

“I know it’s not going to last forever. But we just all enjoy it. But ultimately, our job is to play football for Wrexham Football Club. And we’ve never been distracted from that. And I think a huge credit goes to the manager.

“The gaffer (head coach Phil Parkinson) draws a line. And whether it’s somebody coming to visit or somebody watching the game, the focus is always on training, working hard, and putting in performances on a Saturday or Tuesday night. And that’s never changed.”

It’s been a difficult start to life back in the second division for Wrexham who sit 18th in the table after nine games. However, the chance for bragging rights is up for grabs on Tuesday night as they take on Cardiff City in the fourth round of the EFL Cup.

Wrexham have already got through three rounds of the tournament to set up an all-Welsh clash against their fellow Championship rival. The match at the Racecourse Ground is the first meeting between the two clubs since 2002, when Cardiff ran out 3-2 winners in League One.
