The Melbourne Cup is the richest handicap on the planet thanks to the mega prize money on offer.

Flemington stages the latest renewal of ‘the race that stops the nation’ on Tuesday, 4th November.

Our pals Down Under have upped the purse to a mighty $10million (€5.68m/£4.99m) for the 165th edition and nearly half goes to connections of the first past the post.

There’s plenty of Irish interest in this year’s race thanks to a trio of intended runners.

Joseph O’Brien is hoping Al Riffa or Goodie Two Shoes can become his third Melbourne Cup winner, while Willie Mullins looks for his maiden success with last term’s fifth Absurde.

Melbourne Cup prize money

Every horse that competes in the Melbourne Cup earns a slice of the pie.

The prize money for the 2025 edition breaks down as follows:

First: $4,500,000
Second: $1,100,000
Third: $560,000
Fourth: $360,000
Fifth: $240,000
Sixth to 12th: $160,000
13th to 24th: $100,000

The winning owners take 85 per cent of the cash ($3,825,000), the trainer bags 10 per cent ($450,000) and the jockey gets a five per cent cut ($225,000).

The winning groom collects the Tommy Woodcock Trophy, valued at $15,000, and the breeder gets a $10,000 trophy.

The Melbourne Cup is a Group 1 handicap Flat race over a distance of two miles at Flemington.

It is run on turf and is open to horses aged three and older.
