The police have not made any arrests so far.

However, it is thought that those involved have fled to a nearby ravine.

A police official said the attack followed an explosion on Friday night at a nearby construction site.

The sound from the improvised explosive device (IED) could be heard from miles around.

Nobody was injured and there was only damage done to the structure under construction.

Crete has a history of vendettas between rival families which often spill over into violence.

Many of these incidents are fuelled by perceived insult and a desire for revenge.

Two notable families have had conflicts in the past.

According to local reports, these were related to grazing lands but were resolved through private mediation.

Fresh disagreements emerged when a member of one family bought land to build a house in an area controlled by the other.

That house was the scene of Friday’s explosion.

Illegal gun ownership is a problem in Crete and family vendettas are common on the island.

Guns are often fired to commemorate special occasions such as weddings and festivals.

Only last Sunday was a 52-year-old man shot dead in western Crete.

Back in July, a college professor was shot and killed while visiting his family in Greece.
