Andre Onana is not Turkish Super Lig’s best goalkeeper, he’s a downgrade, warns former Trabzonspor coach

Manchester United loanee Andre Onana has been warned that he has to prove himself.

Andre Onana was forced to desperately search for a new team in early September after he was pushed towards the Manchester United exit.

Manchester United’s move to sign Senne Lammens saw Onana fall to third choice, prompting him to make a loan switch to Trabzonspor.

Andre Onana compared to Ugurcan Cakir

Andre Onana arrived at Trabzonspor with a high profile, as a former Champions League finalist with Inter Milan, and two controversial years at Old Trafford.

His performances at Trabzonspor have been mixed so far, and there is debate over how he compares to his predecessor.

Former Trabzonspor coach Sadi Tekelioglu has told Fanatik that he has not seen anything from Onana so far that has made him think he is better than Cakir.

Tekeliogu said: “Turkiye’s best goalkeeper is still Ugurcan Cakir.

“Onana isn’t a bad goalkeeper, but I think Ugurcan is better than him. Ugurcan is ahead; his experience makes the difference.”

Cakir, 29, made his Trabzonspor debut back in 2014 and went on to make more than 280 appearances, also representing his country.

What Andre Onana must do to win his detractor over

Tekeliogu says Andre Onana can still change his mind, but he has set a very high bar for the Manchester United loanee.

He explained: “They say Onana made Ugurcan Cakir forgotten, but that’s not true. If Onana makes this team champion, then he’ll make Ugurcan forgotten. It’s not right to make comparisons right now.”

Trabzonspor rank in an impressive second place in the Turkish Super Lig after 10 games.

But the team in front are Cakir’s Galatasaray, who have already built up a five-point lead and are being led by free-scoring striker Victor Osimhen.
