Remembering the 2011 October Snowstorm: 20 inches of snow fell in Acton 14 years ago today

PORTLAND (WGME) — Snow in October?

Yes, it’s possible, and that was the case not too long ago.

Fourteen years ago to the day, it was a much different scene outside in Maine.

The famous late October snowstorm of 2011, commonly referred to as “Snowtober,” dropped double-digit totals in many areas.

Acton topped the list in Maine of 20 inches.

Bridgton saw nearly 17.5 inches, while Oxford, Gray and Turner saw around or more than a foot of snow.

The highest total was found in the town of Peru, Massachusetts, with 32 inches.

This was a look at some of the footage of the storm.

You can see the snow piling up on the sidewalks and streets, and the plows were out in full force.

Early-season snowstorms often bring with them a wet and sticky snow.

When you factor that in, along with the gusty winds and the fact that many leaves were still on the trees, that caused a lot of trees and branches to fall, which played a major role in the number of outages.

In Maine, there were around 160,000 outages that occurred between October 29 and 30.

All across the Northeast, there were more than 3 million outages, with Connecticut alone seeing around 830,000.

During this storm, Portland saw around 5.2 inches.

While that was not nearly the highest total in the state, it was the most snow Portland has ever seen on record in the month of October.

Second place was in 1969 when 3.8 inches fell.

The good news is, we’ll have to wait until at least November to see our first flakes fly in Portland.
