A minor landslide occurred at Camp Valdez, Barangay Mambaroto in Sipalay City, Negros Occidental, after a magnitude 5.5 earthquake hit neighboring Candoni town on Monday morning, November 3.
The earthquake, felt at Intensity III in Sipalay City, and heavy rains are believed to have triggered the landslide, Dionilo Bogtae, Sipalay City Disaster Risk Reduction Management coordinator, said.
The landslide also caused trees to fall on part of the highway, which were immediately removed, he said.
The road is passable, but only one vehicle is allowed to pass at a time through the critical area at Camp Valdez, Bogtae said.
Multiple cracks and landslides have previously occurred on the mountain slope of Camp Valdez. The area has been cordoned off to ensure public safety, and a warning sign is up.
A landslide-prone area sign on the side of the highway warns motorists and passersby that falling soil and rocks could occur in the area, especially during heavy rain or earthquakes.*
