Sunderland vs Everton preview

French managers have a patchy record in the Premier League but Sunderland’s Regis Le Bris has enjoyed a superb start to his first season in the English top flight.

A home win over Everton would give Le Bris 20 points from his first ten Premier League fixtures – two more than his illustrious compatriot Arsene Wenger earned with Arsenal in 1996.

Granit Xhaka played in Wenger’s final game in English football, a 1-0 win at Huddersfield in May 2018, and he has been a key part of Sunderland’s early-season success.

Fellow summer signings goalkeeper Robin Roefs, defenders Omar Alderete and Nordi Mukiele and Xhaka’s central-midfield partner Noah Sadiki have also excelled for the Championship playoff winners, and young winger Chemsdine Talbi scored a classy injury-time winner at Chelsea in Sunderland’s last league fixture.

The 2-1 victory at Stamford Bridge was a significant result for the Black Cats, whose first four wins came against bottom-three clubs Nottingham Forest, West Ham and Wolves as well as Brentford, another team who were prominent in the ante-post relegation betting.

While Le Bris and his players will get a rousing reception from the home fans, Everton boss David Moyes is a less popular figure at the Stadium of Light.

Moyes’s only season in charge of Sunderland ended in Premier League relegation in 2016-17 and his Everton side have suffered back-to-back defeats to nil against Manchester City and Tottenham.

Spurs were a little flattered by the 3-0 scoreline as they inflicted Everton’s first defeat at the Hill Dickinson Stadium but Moyes’s men still look unconvincing in attack.

With goals likely to be scarce, the draw is the best bet at the Stadium of Light. Two of Everton’s last six league games ended all-square and they needed a fortunate injury-time goal from Jack Grealish to edge past Crystal Palace 2-1 last month.

Everton veteran Gueye poses underrated threat

Grealish, who has created four of Everton’s nine league goals this term, is an obvious threat to Sunderland but midfielder Idrissa Gueye is also getting into dangerous positions.

Gueye failed to have a shot in his last away game at Manchester City but had seven attempts in his previous three road appearances, scoring against Liverpool at Anfield.

Back Ballard to rise high at set-pieces

Tottenham defender Micky van de Ven scored two first-half headers from corners in the 3-0 win at Everton, who should be wary of Sunderland’s Dan Ballard at set-pieces.

The Northern Ireland international scored against West Ham on the opening weekend and averages two shots per 90 minutes this season.

Under 3.5 goals

Only one of Sunderland and Everton’s combined 18 Premier League games this season featured over 3.5 goals and that was the Toffees’ 3-2 win at bottom club Wolves.

Omar Alderete to have one or more shots

The imposing Sunderland centre-back scored the winner at Nottingham Forest in September and has had six attempts at goal in seven league starts.

Everton to receive most cards

The Toffees have picked up 22 cards in the league this term, seven more than Sunderland, and their last two opponents – Manchester City and Tottenham – did not receive a single booking.
