Academy Award-winning actor Emma Stone has admitted that even her huge fame doesn’t stop people from mistaking her for Harry Potter actor Emma Watson.

Speaking on the Happy.Sad.Confused podcast, Josh Horowitz asked Stone and Bugonia co-star, Jesse Plemons, the last actor they’d been mistaken for. With a smile, Stone admitted, “It’s always Emma Watson.”

The Easy A star went on to tell another story about a mistaken identity: “The day after my 28th birthday, I went to see Alan Cuming perform at like Carnegie Hall, and I was there with my friend Noah and someone came up and we were trying to find our seats and they said, ‘Hey, do you mind if I take a picture with you?’”

Stone continued, “And I was like, ‘Oh, sorry, we’re trying to find our seats,’ or whatever. And he was understandably a little pissed, and he goes, ‘All right, well, I loved you on Will and Grace.’”

The actor was mistaken for Debra Messing, who was two decades older than her at the time of the story. Stone saw the funny side of the incident, laughing, “Swear to God. He thought I was Debra Messing. Yeah. He thought I was Debra Messing. I’m still called Debra Messing to this day by Noah. It’s been almost 10 years, and I’ll always be Debra.”

When it was Plemons’ turn to answer the question, he struggled. He said that he is often mistaken for “All the people with sorta red hair… Take your pick.” When Stone suggested that he often gets Matt Damon, Plemons admitted, “Yes, but people don’t actually think I’m him.”

Similarly, earlier this year, Hollywood star Nicholas Cage revealed that members of the public get him mixed up with Nick Cave on a daily basis.

Stone and Plemmons will next appear in the 2025 Yorgos Lanthimos film, Bugonia. His new movie is a remake of the 2003 South Korean sci-fi comedy Save the Green Planet. It follows two conspiracy-obsessed friends who kidnap the high-powered CEO of a major corporation because they are convinced she’s an alien intent on destroying Earth.
