NYC mayoral hopeful Curtis Sliwa shows up to election poll site in cat tie and a book for feline lovers

It’s the purr-fect tie for this cat-idate.
Infamous feline fan Curtis Sliwa showed up to his Upper West Side polling site in a cat tie and with the book “Pawverbs for a Cat Lover’s Heart” Tuesday.
Wearing his signature red beret, the Guardian Angels founder and Republican mayoral nominee accompanied his wife, Nancy, as she voted on Election Day after he cast his ballot during early voting.

“I have the people’s support and hopefully by the time the ballots are counted tonight when all is said and done, I’ll be the next mayor of the city of New York,” Sliwa — who is polling third, and in the low double-digits, told reporters.
“And you know, animals throughout the city will be partying hearty because they’ll have a friend both in Grace Mansion and in City Hall.”
Sliwa and his wife are known for their animal advocacy work, and he created a third-party line called “Protect Animals,” that his name also appeared under on the ballot, in addition to the GOP slot.

Sliwa, who once lived with more than a dozen rescue cats, has drawn some teasing over his furry friends — including from President Trump, who urged voters to pick ex-New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo over the Republican.

“This isn’t exactly ideal, where he wants to make Gracie Mansion a home for the cats,” Trump said on Fox News last month. “Gracie Mansion is the magnificent home of Fiorello La Guardia and the great mayors, [like] Rudy Giuliani.”
But Sliwa has stood by his devotion to animals, stating in response to Trump’s remark at the time, “I’m proud of the lifesaving work my wife Nancy and rescuers across New York do every day to protect animals in distress.”

He even tried to vote with one of his cats when he ran for mayor in 2021, but was told by election workers he couldn’t bring the four-legged friend in.
Sliwa ultimately left the cat with a staffer while he cast his ballot.
On Tuesday, while talking to WNYC host Brian Lehrer, he encouraged voters to give him the nod on his newly-created line dedicated to animal advocacy.
“So if you can’t vote for me as a Republican, vote for me, because I will protect the animals, along with my wife and so many others out there who are listening to your program now who are animal rescuers, and it doesn’t have to do with party affiliation,” he said.
