Controversial character returns in EastEnders to an explosive reaction

Ravi’s back… (Picture: BBC/Metro)

Ravi Gulati (Aaron Thiara) has made some terrible decisions in his effort to replenish his family’s finances after Bernie Taylor (Clair Norris) effectively wiped out the entire Panesar fortune before absconding with her loot.

Approaching known underworld dabbler, Nicola Mitchell (Laura Doddington), for a contact in the drug trade, Ravi established a dealing operation.

Although originally based outside the square, he cuckooed Kojo Asare (Dayo Koleosho) alongside lieutenant, Okie Okyere (Aayan Ibikunle Shoderu), after trapping Harry Mitchell (Elijah Holloway) in his dark new business.

Unable to kill his conscience and unable to live with what Ravi and Okie had done to his best friend, Kojo, Harry turned to his mum, the previously mentioned Nicola, for help in escaping the bleak world he’d found himself trapped in.

Though Nicola managed to convince Ravi (via various threats) to release Harry, his determination to rescue Kojo involved roping his dad, Teddy Mitchell (Roland Manookian), into a scheme involving a hidden camera, which placed him right back in Ravi’s crosshairs and landed him imprisoned in the trap house and routinely fed drugs.

When word reached Ravi that rival drug dealers were out for his blood after encroaching on their turf, he panicked and rallied his unknowing family to get out of dodge. Though he demanded that Okie free Harry and Kojo while he was away, Okie delighted in keeping the two prisoners.

Returning home with a stronger sense of what matters to him, Ravi decided to step back from the drug ring he’d built and handed the reins over to Okie, determined to focus on his relationship with Priya Nandra-Hart (Sophie Khan Levy) and children Avani (Aaliyah James) and Nugget (Juhaim Rasul Choudhury).

Though as things within the drug ring escalate beyond Okie’s control, it seems that next week, Ravi will have to face up to his sins.

After an explosive week, Ravi returns to the Square and has to face the music. As he’s thrown immediately into a fierce battle between Priya and Nicola, and with Okie begging for his help, it’s hardly a welcome home to be jealous of.

As George Knight (Colin Salmon) confirms to Priya that Ravi was neck deep in the illicit operation, her heart breaks and she angrily throws him out, reminding him of his promise to stay away from crime.

Has Ravi’s drug enterprise cost him his family forever?
