Bill Would Ban Shutdown Pay for Congress

(WASHINGTON, DC) Many lawmakers in Congress are declining their paychecks during the government shutdown. One Wisconsin congressman wants to make it the law.

U.S. Rep. Bryan Steil (R-Janesville) introduced a bill Tuesday to require Congress to go without pay during government shutdowns. Steil said Congress should not get paid if essential federal workers aren’t getting paid.

Essential workers not getting paid during the current shutdown include active-duty military, FBI agents, and air traffic controllers, to name a few. The federal government is in the midst of its second-longest shutdown ever.
