Antonio Brown arrested, extradited from Dubai to US as he faces attempted murder charge

Ex-NFL star Antonio Brown is in custody.

The former wide receiver was extradited to the United States to face attempted murder charges related to a shooting in May outside a celebrity boxing event in Miami.

Brown, 37, was apprehended by U.S. Marshals and was extradited from Dubai, though it was unclear when he would be handed over to authorities in Miami.

“Miami Police confirm that U.S. Marshals have apprehended Antonio Brown and that he has been extradited to the U.S.,” Miami PD spokesperson Mike Vega told NBC News. “No date has been set for his transfer to Miami-Dade County.”

Brown was taken into custody at Newark Airport and and he was booked into Essex County Jail in New Jersey on Thursday, NBC6 in Miami reported.

Up until Thursday, Brown was at large after a warrant was issued for his arrest in June on an attempted murder with a firearm charge.

The former football player was overseas when the warrant was issued. Brown’s attorney was able to get a $10,000 bond, which also included house arrest.

He remained overseas and did not return to South Florida despite the arraignment, though Brown continued to be active on social media and had even posted on his Instagram story shortly after news broke of his capture by authorities, promoting a sports betting brand.

The alleged incident occurred in May outside a celebrity boxing match in Miami, with Brown claiming at the time that he had been jumped in an attempted robbery.

Police detained Brown following the incident, and he was eventually released.

Online video of the chaos showed Brown had appeared to engage in a scrap with several men, and another clip showed the moments when gunfire could be heard.

Bystanders in the parking lot told authorities that Brown was the shooter, according to the warrant, and Miami Police detectives later obtained video of Brown allegedly punching the victim and later taking the gun of a security officer before moving toward the victim.

The alleged victim has been identified as Zul-Qarnain Kwame Nantambu.

“Mr. Nantambu stated Mr. Brown proceeded to shoot at him (possibly grazing him in the neck), placing him in fear for his life,” the arrest warrant stated.

The two have known each other since 2022, Nantambu told police, and indicated that he and Brown had words before things turned physical.
