Woll, 27, left the team during training camp to deal with a personal matter and didn’t return until Oct. 27.
The 6-foot-3 netminder had been placed on long-term injury reserve and wasn’t eligible to come off until Nov. 1. He had been practising with the club over the last week and his time with the Marlies will allow him to get game action before rejoining the Maple Leafs.
“I’ve been really blown away by how much support I’ve received,” Woll told reporters on Friday. “I’ve kind of decided that all I’m going to say about my time away is that I’m disappointed to have missed time and I’m very happy to be back. I’d really like all the focus to be on my job to do here [and] I don’t want to create any distractions for myself or for the team.”
Woll had a 27-24-1 record last season with a 2.73 goals-against average and.909 save percentage while splitting the starting goaltender duties with Anthony Stolarz.
He also went 3-4 in the playoffs with a 3.56 GAA and .886 save percentage after taking over the net from an injured Stolarz during the team’s second-round loss to the Florida Panthers.
Stolarz has been the primary starter for the Maple Leafs in Woll’s absence, going 6-4-1 with a 3.11 GAA and an .895 save percentage to start the season. He is also a winner of each of his last four starts.
Toronto sits in fourth place in the Atlantic Division with an 8-5-1 record and have back-to-back games over the weekend where they will face the Boston Bruins on Saturday and Carolina Hurricanes Sunday.
