Mel Gibson Fights for the Title of “Best Action Hero Parent” in First Trailer for Intense New Thriller

Lethal Weapon star and controversial Hollywood icon, Mel Gibson, is back in action. The 69-year-old Academy Award winner is gearing up to add his name to both the “best aged action hero” and “best action hero parent” lists as he takes on the role of a dedicated father and reclusive survivalist who must protect his daughter after they are targeted by a ruthless drug kingpin.

Directed by Raja Collins, written by Adam Hampton, and starring Sophia Hublitz, Shelly Hennig, and Jordi Molla alongside Gibson, Hunting Season promises to deliver another gripping action antihero role for the Braveheart star, who has slowly returned to the fold following several years of controversy. Hunting Season is all set to land in theaters and on Digital on December 5, 2025, and you can check out both the newly released trailer and the official synopsis for the action thriller below…

“When a mysterious young woman washes up on the bank of a local river, both the feisty twelve year old girl who discovers her and the overprotective father are forever changed by the arrival of this mysterious stranger into their home, and by the ruthless drug lord who will stop at nothing to kill her once and for all.”

Mel Gibson Is Going Hunting…

After becoming near-unemployable in Hollywood during the mid-2000s following allegations of domestic abuse, an antisemitic tirade, alleged homophobic comments, and racist remarks, Mel Gibson has now not only slithered his way back into Hollywood, but he’s also now a “special ambassador.”

Whether we like it or not, Gibson is back, and Hunting Season looks to be making good use of the actor’s gruff likability and action hero prowess. The action thriller bears some similarities with Gibson’s 2016 action outing, Blood Father, which also finds him starring as a protective father with a particular set of skills. Blood Father is one of Gibson’s best genre efforts from the latter part of his career, standing at 89% on Rotten Tomatoes. Time will tell whether Hunting Season can find the same success.

Alongside taking another action thriller role in Hunting Season, Gibson is also gearing up to take on directing duties once again for his long-awaited biblical epic sequels The Resurrection of the Christ parts one and two. Not only that, the actor is also still hoping to lead both in front of and behind the camera for a fifth sequel in his best-loved action franchise, Lethal Weapon. Speaking recently with MovieWeb, filmmaker Allan Ungar, who helmed the Gibson-starring 2022 crime thriller Bandit, revealed that he has spoken at length with Gibson about a possible fifth installment in the beloved franchise, saying…

“You know, [I] ended up speaking with Mel [Gibson] quite a bit about his intentions for the fifth one (Lethal Weapon), which, you know, I don’t know where it’s at in the development world, with Warner Brothers and New Line. He’s always had a plan. I think his plan right now, though, is to get back into the Passion of the Christ, which is shooting in Italy, so I think he’s going to be busy with that for a while. I don’t know if we’ll ever see Lethal Weapon 5, but I also don’t know, I don’t know that we need to see it. Yeah, kind of wrapped it up quite poignantly.”
