Ceolwulf wins Champions Mile in photo finish as favourites fall well short

Ceolwulf and jockey Chad Schofield have won the Champions Mile at Flemington in a classic photo finish.
The five-year-old just got over the line ahead of Pericles and Ben Melham.
Ceolwulf took home the $3 million race in conditions graded a heavy nine on the last day of the Melbourne Cup Carnival.

Mr Brightside was the favourite for the race, looking for its 11th group one win, but ultimately got nowhere near it.
Fan favourite Pride Of Jenni led early as it usually does, but was pulled up early and didn’t get near the winners.
Stefi Magnetica came in third and Treasurethe Moment fourth.
Schofield was ecstatic with the performance of Ceolwulf after the race.

“Very gutsy. He jumped really well today and took the most of that good jump to put himself in a more forward position. Mr Brightside was gone, so I had to get off his back and get going,” he told Nine’s Billy Slater.
“He actually had a good look when he hit the Flemington straight for the first time. He looked lost for a little while but then you could see him with his blinkers and he came back. He was the stronger horse late.”
The result was certainly a surprise, given Pride Of Jenni’s form coming in and the quality of Mr Brightside, but the tough track conditions likely evened the playing field.
