What’s the story
Quinton de Kock has scripted history by becoming the second-fastest batter to complete 7,000 ODI runs (by innings).
The star South African opener accomplished the milestone with his 44th run in the third and final ODI against hosts Pakistan at Faisalabad’s Iqbal Stadium.
Notably, the ongoing series marked de Kock’s return to the ODI format after two years.
Here we decode his stats.
De Kock only behind Amla
As per ESPNcricinfo, de Kock reached the milestone in his 158th inning.
The only batter to reach the 7,000 ODI run landmark faster is the southpaw’s former teammate Hashim Amla, who took 150 innings.
De Kock displaced New Zealand great Kane Williamson at the second place, with the latter taking 159 innings.
Indian talisman Virat Kohli follows suit with 161 innings.
Fifth SA batter with this milestone
De Kock has raced past 7,000 ODI runs at an average of 45-plus and a strike rate of 95-plus.
He overall became just the fifth SA batter to touch this landmark.
He has joined the likes of Jacques Kallis (11,550), AB de Villiers (9,427), Amla (8,113), and Herschelle Gibbs (8,094).
Interestingly, de Kock is the first left-handed Proteas batter to attain this massive milestone.
22 centuries in ODIs
De Kock has scored 22 centuries in ODIs, which is the third most for any South African player.
Only Amla (27) and de Villiers (25) have more ODI tons for South Africa.
Meanwhile, QDK is only behind Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara (23 tons) in terms of designated keepers with the most ODI hundreds.
De Kock also has 31 fifties in the format.
Most runs by a keeper in an ODI tournament
In the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, De Kock scored a whopping 594 runs from 10 matches at an average of 59.40.
These are the most runs by a keeper in an ODI tournament.
He had four tons in this tournament, only behind India’s Rohit Sharma who scored five hundreds in a single WC edition (2019).
De Kock only behind Dhoni
De Kock smashed a career-best 113-ball 178 in a 2016 ODI against Australia, the third-highest individual ODI score by a SA batter.
Only MS Dhoni boasts a better individual ODI score as a designated keeper (183* vs Sri Lanka).
De Kock also holds the record for the second-most runs as a keeper while opening in ODIs (6,900-plus).
He is only behind Adam Gilchrist (9,200).
