Near-Perfect Image of Robert Downey Jr’s Doctor Doom Reveals Connection to 2 Major Avengers

Avengers: Doomsday is getting tantalizingly close, with production officially wrapped on the first of the two-part finale to the MCU’s Multiverse Saga. New details are confirmed about the upcoming film with increasing regularity, as audiences get a better idea of what to expect in the highly anticipated crossover event. With just a little over a year before Doomsday hits theaters, the world just got its best look yet at Robert Downey Jr.’s new villain, Doctor Doom.
A few months back, Marvel Studios participated in a merchandise expo in Shanghai. During the event, images surfaced online of a poster featuring the first look at the MCU’s Doctor Doom. Now, the images have finally been released in full HD, offering the best look yet at Robert Downey Jr.’s formidable villain. The new high-resolution sneak peek not only shows off the best live-action Doctor Doom design yet, but also hints at a few clues about what audiences should expect from his character when he finally arrives next year in Avengers: Doomsday. Embedded in Doctor Doom’s armor are easy-to-miss details that potentially connect the villain to two of the MCU’s most powerful Avengers.

The new HD still of Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom reveals several key things about his character in Avengers: Doomsday. In what is surely a relief for many fans, the character’s design strongly adheres to that of his comic book counterpart. This comes after multiple underwhelming live-action interpretations of the character, including in 2015’s largely despised Fant4stic. More interesting than the armor itself, however, are the insignias that he bears on his chest. Doom’s design includes two cloak clasps, each with a distinct symbol. Each of these symbols seemingly connects the villain to one Avenger from the Sacred Timeline. On his right is a six-pointed star that closely resembles that of Captain Marvel. Brie Larson’s superhero wears a similar symbol on her chest. This is especially interesting given that Captain Marvel is not yet confirmed to appear in Doomsday. If her character has some kind of connection to Doctor Doom, however, there is a strong chance that the half-Kree superhero will show up in the film.
The second insignia is more difficult to pin down. The cloak clasp on Doctor Doom’s left includes a horizontal rectangle with a smaller structure jutting out on its underside. While the design is ambiguous, it does resemble Thor’s hammer Mjölnir. Unlike Captain Marvel, Chris Hemsworth’s god of thunder is confirmed to appear in Avengers: Doomsday, making his connection to Doctor Doom all the more important to the film’s story. The MCU went out of its way to bring Mjölnir back after its destruction during the events of Thor: Ragnarok, with the hammer reforming to grant Jane Foster the powers of Thor in Thor: Love and Thunder. Mjölnir’s return could have been an early setup for this surprising connection with Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom, who seemingly sports the hammer on his armor. If Doctor Doom does indeed bear connections to both Captain Marvel and Thor, one question still remains: what does it mean for Avengers: Doomsday?
What Doctor Doom’s Avengers Connections Could Mean

Doctor Doom’s connection to Thor and Captain Marvel could have many meanings–and none of them bode well for the Avengers in question. One theory would suggest that these symbols are trophies of sorts, boasting of Doom’s victory over the heroes. It is possible that, in his home universe, Doctor Doom killed Thor and Captain Marvel, later emblazoning symbols of their defeat into his armor. As two of the most powerful heroes in the universe, it would make sense that Doom would want to immortalize his victory over them in particular. Seeing these symbols would then strike fear into the hearts of Doom’s enemies. On a similar note, these insignias could reveal factions that have fallen under Doctor Doom’s control in his home universe. Thor is the leader of New Asgard, and Captain Marvel is a representative of the Kree. It may be that both New Asgard and the Kree fell to Doctor Doom’s power in his timeline, leading the villain to embed symbols of their mightiest warriors as a reminder that he is now the one in control.
There could be other interpretations of Doctor Doom’s mysterious symbols. Some have wondered if one or both could simply be insignias of Latveria, the Eastern European country that Doom rules over in the comics. This theory runs into trouble, however, after The Fantastic Four: First Steps, which offers a sneak peek at the Latverian flag during the Future Foundation scene. The flag depicted in this scene does not match either of the symbols on Doctor Doom’s armor, suggesting that there is no connection between the nation of Latveria and these particular insignias. While Doctor Doom may hail from a universe other than that of the Fantastic Four, Marvel would most likely want to keep relative consistency across timelines in this matter. Additionally, the symbol that resembles Mjölnir could easily be translated as something else entirely. There is some consistency between this insignia and similar ones worn by certain variants of the Sorcerer Supreme, including Defender Strange. This could denote that Doctor Doom is the Sorcerer Supreme of his universe, which seems very likely to be true. However, the MCU has never established an official symbol to denote someone as the Sorcerer Supreme, and even then, the connection between these symbols is meager at best. Therefore, Mjölnir remains the most likely interpretation of this particular symbol.
When Will the First Avengers: Doomsday Trailer Drop?

Strangely, there has been very little marketing for Avengers: Doomsday beyond its initial casting announcement in March and the occasional social media post from the Russo Brothers. However, with only thirteen months until the film hits theaters, Marvel Studios is surely planning a robust promotional campaign for Doomsday. Some reports even suggest that the first trailer could come before the end of the year, with audiences getting their first good look at Doomsday when Avatar: Fire and Ash hits theaters in December. Given that filming wrapped up a few months ago, this seems like a realistic time for the first trailer to come out, with more heavy marketing coming in the calendar year of 2026.
When the first trailers for Avengers: Doomsday finally come out, audiences will finally get a better look at Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom in action. This will most likely include a closer look at the mysterious insignias on his cape clasps, which could portend dark things on the horizon for at least two of the core Avengers. Even more exciting, the first footage from Doomsday will also reveal what powers Doom possesses in the MCU. Previous live-action iterations of the character cherry-picked which of their comic book counterpart’s abilities to include, but the MCU seems poised to change this disappointing trend. Audiences should expect Downey’s Doctor Doom to be a Master of the Mystic Arts, a pioneer of innovative technology, and the powerful leader of a nation, making him the strongest live-action iteration of the character yet. With all these powers at his fingertips and a potential history with his own universe’s Avengers, Doctor Doom is shaping up to be the most frightening villain the MCU has ever introduced.
