Sheffield Wednesday must request an extension of Harry Amass’ loan for the second half of the season.

Manchester United youngster Amass signed for Wednesday on a season-long loan deal, however, although the agreement is set up for the entire campaign, it technically expires on January 5.

This means Sheffield Wednesday must request to extend the loan if they wish to keep him for the season. If they do so, United will then choose whether to accept or reject the request.

Amass has made 10 starts in the Championship since his arrival and is understood to be thoroughly enjoying life at Hillsborough, so the expectation is the loan will end up being for the full campaign.

The agreement was structured as an alternative to inserting a break clause into the deal, something United often do. The structure of the deal suited Wednesday given their financial uncertainty.

However, United are covering the costs of Amass’ loan to facilitate game time, which raises the possibility of another Championship club making an offer to sign Amass and offering to cover the costs themselves.

That does not necessarily mean that an offer to cover the costs of Amass’ loan would be favoured, due to sources stressing that game time is the priority when making such a decision.

United were happy to send Amass to Wednesday because of their loan development plan. Amass has benefited from regular minutes and has made a strong impression at Hillsborough.

Wednesday were recently deducted 12 points recently after filing for administration. Their fans had protested for Dejphon Chansiri to leave the club, and the EFL had previously charged Wednesday with multiple breaches of regulations after they failed to pay players’ wages on time.

Ruben Amorim handed Amass his first-team debut against Leicester City at the King Power Stadium in March, and the youngster made a total of seven first-team appearances last season.

Amass was named on the bench for the Europa League final against Tottenham. There was a chance he could have remained with the first team but Diego Leon impressed in pre-season and Amass was loaned out.

The youngster was not brought on the US tour because United planned to send him on loan.
