Penn State? Well, the Nittany Lions came into the season ranked No. 2 and have played like number two for the last month. It led to the firing of James Franklin, and a season-ending injury to quarterback Drew Allar hasn’t helped things, either. The Nittany Lions are 0-5 in Big Ten play and doesn’t seem to have a whole lot left to play for.

After suffering its fifth straight loss while on the hunt for the replacement to former head coach James Franklin, Penn State football is in need of a rebound.

The once preseason national championship-favorite Nittany Lions are now without a permanent head coach, starting quarterback Drew Allar or a win since their 52-6 win over Villanova on Sept. 13.

In spite of everything, the Nittany Lions are still in bowl contention. Any hope of a postseason appearance is predicated on winning three more games. One of those, should the Nittany Lions put on a near-perfect performance, could come against the No. 2 Indiana Hoosiers Saturday in Beaver Stadium.

No. 2 Indiana football has never won in Happy Valley, but IU is aiming to change that this Saturday when it travels to play Penn State at Beaver Stadium. The Hoosiers will look to move one win closer to a Big Ten Championship game and College Football Playoff berth, while the Nittany Lions are desperate to end a five-game losing skid.

Curt Cignetti’s squad has everything to play for with three regular season games remaining. Penn State probably thought it would be in IU’s place at this point in the season, but instead a free-fall has ensued in Happy Valley. Two teams with two completely different seasons going head to head on national television.

Since Smith took over after James Franklin’s firing on Oct. 12, Penn State has lost in two of the Big Ten’s toughest environments. The Nittany Lions let Iowa come back and win 25-24 at Kinnick Stadium before losing in Columbus to No. 1 Ohio State 38-14.

While Smith tries to change Penn State’s trajectory with just four games left, it’s taken Curt Cignetti just two seasons to completely change the image of Indiana football.

The Hoosiers won a school record 11 games and made their first playoff appearance last season. This year they’ve extended their school record home winning streak to 14. Now, they can achieve another milestone — winning for the first time in 14 tries in State College.

The Hoosiers have struggled mightily in this series, going just 2-25 overall. It’s not something Cignetti intends to talk much about.

“Everything in this game is earned, not given, and you’ve got to earn it every single day,” Cignetti said. “The game gives you nothing. You get out what you put in. We’ve got to really be sharp this week and have a great mindset.”
