ALW Match Wrap: Roar claim points in lively clash at HBF Park

Ella Lincoln’s first home goal for the club and a stunning effort from Rola Badawiya were not enough to prevent Glory from slipping to a 3-2 defeat against Brisbane Roar in an entertaining ALW Round 2 clash at HBF Park on Friday afternoon.

A deflected effort from Grace Kuilamu put Roar in front midway through the first half, only for Glory to draw level soon after courtesy of Badawiya’s brilliance.

A quickfire brace early in the second half from Dutch import Bente Jansen, however, put the Queenslanders in control and although Lincoln’s well-taken late goal set up a tense finale, Glory were unable to find the equaliser their performance arguably warranted.

After a quiet opening 20 minutes in which neither side was able to assert their superiority, the game burst into life when Roar’s Kuilamu took aim from just outside the box and a deflection off Onyi Zogg’s hip took the ball past Alyssa Dall’Oste in the Glory goal.

Glory’s response to finding themselves trailing for the first time this season was as quick as it was impressive.

Within four minutes, Badawiya seized upon some hesitant Roar defending 20 metres out, beat Leia Varley with a clever turn and unleashed a thumping, left-foot shot which arrowed its way into the top corner.

Visibly buoyed by that spectacular leveller, the home side came close to hitting the front shortly before the break when the impressive Emma Tovar fired in a rising effort which flashed inches over the bar.

Glory looked to have the upper hand at that point, but the complexion of the game changed in the space of three minutes early in the second half.

Sharn Freier had been relatively quiet until she managed to get away down the left and stand up an inviting cross which Jansen nodded powerfully home.

And the same duo combined for Roar’s third goal almost immediately, Freier slipping the ball to Jansen at the top of the box and the latter’s low shot just about crossing the line after Dall’Oste had done well to tip it onto the post.

That double blow temporarily took the wind out of Glory’s sails, but they gradually began to claw their way back into the contest and almost reduced the arrears when Badawiya’s shot was brilliantly headed off the line by Seidl after the Roar defence had failed to clear a corner.

Substitute Lincoln did finally find a way through, racing in behind in stoppage-time and finishing calmly at the second attempt, but Roar successfully negotiated the final seconds to lock in their second win of the campaign.
