Notebook | WRs Adonai Mitchell and John Metchie III Will ‘Definitely Be Part of What We’ve Got Going On’
Heading into Week 10, the Jets have new offensive weapons.
WRs Adonai Mitchell and John Metchie III joined the Green & White as part of trades with the Indianapolis Colts and Philadelphia Eagles, respectively, and HC Aaron Glenn said Friday “they’re still learning our system.” Though it’s not clear whether they’ll see game action on Friday, Glenn is encouraged by what each receiver can contribute moving forward.
“Metchie is a really good slot receiver,” Glenn said. “I’m not saying he can’t play outside, but man, he is a master when it comes to route concepts in the slot, being able to punch in and out of routes, being able to create separation because of his quickness. When you look at AD, man, he is a true X receiver and he is one that can win the one-on-one battle. Slants, digs, go balls. So, we’re going to try to use those guys to what they do best.”
A former second-round pick of the Houston Texans, Metchie has appeared in 36 games across 3 seasons — 2 with Houston and half of this season with Philadelphia. He has recorded 44 receptions for 420 yards and a TD.
“I think [I’m] really versatile,” Metchie said of his skill set. “I think I bring a really good physical attitude, not just in the pass game but in the run game. I think [I’m] really well-rounded, not really boxed into one role.”
A second-round draft selection of the Colts in 2024, Mitchell recorded 32 receptions for 464 yards in 25 games with Indianapolis — and Glenn hopes to help unlock even more of the young player’s potential.
“That’s the plan — for him to come here, get a change of scenery,” Glenn said. “Because he is definitely talented. I think you guys already know that from what he did in college coming to the NFL. So he’s excited to be here, I do know that.”
As both players embrace their new environment, learning the offense quickly has been top priority.
“Just a ton of studying,” Mitchell said of his process this week. “In the middle of the season, everybody’s pretty much up to speed and now my job is to try to catch them. And try to get up to speed as fast as possible. “
He added: “I feel like every day is an opportunity. … I’m excited to attack each and every day and try to become the best player I can for the team.”
