Report: Another team tried to trade for former Colts’ WR AD Mitchell

Before the Colts traded AD Mitchell to the Jets as part of the Sauce Gardner deal, another team tried to acquire him.

Before AD Mitchell ended up as a member of the New York Jets, the former Indianapolis Colts’ wide receiver was nearly a member of the Cleveland Browns.

According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, Mitchell received “real interest” prior to Tuesday’s trade deadline.

Had Mitchell not ended up in New York, “the Browns planned to complete a trade for Mitchell,” wrote Rapoport.

In return, the Colts would have received a late-round draft pick for him.

But instead, along with the two first-round draft picks that the Colts sent to the Jets in the Sauce Gardner trade, Mitchell was a part of that deal as well.

“I’m happy I didn’t find out through social media,” Mitchell said of the trade when meeting with the New York media. “Was able to have my conversation with the GM, the head coach, a ton of respect to them, and I was able to say my goodbyes to everybody. It was a very emotional day, but like I said, I’m excited to be here and now where my feet are.”

The second-year wideout, whom the Colts selected in the second round of the 2024 NFL draft, has battled inconsistency in his short NFL career. However, the talent he possesses is clear as day.

Mitchell’s combination of size, speed, and route-running abilities allows him to create separation, and he can impact all levels of the field.

Mitchell has appeared in 25 games with eight starts. He’s caught 32-of-66 passes for 464 yards.
