Shock as state’s cop union boss dies

Queensland’s Cross Border Commissioner and former police union boss Ian Leavers has been found dead.

A Queensland Police Service (QPS) spokesman said police were called to the scene of a non-suspicious death in Mount Ommaney at about 9.50am on Monday.

“Police investigations in relation to this matter are ongoing,” the spokesman said.

Mr Leavers was a member of the QPS for over 35 years, serving as a general duties officer with multiple branches – including with the Criminal Investigation Branch, Juvenile Aid Bureau, Operational Skills Trainer, Traffic Branch and Accident Investigation Squad.

In a statement on Monday afternoon, Premier David Crisafulli remembered Mr Leavers as a strong voice for the challenges facing communities and businesses along Queensland’s borders in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Ian earned the respect of Queenslanders for saying it how it was, and always standing up for the police service he loved,” Mr Crisafulli said.

“He was dedicated, principled, and driven to make a difference for this state.

“Queenslanders will remember his leadership during some of our state’s most tragic and defining events.

“He left a strong contribution first as a member of the Queensland police and later as president of the Queensland Police Union.

“He championed safer working environments for police and advocated for them to be well-resourced and supported.

“On behalf of all Queenslanders, we extend heartfelt condolences to Ian’s family and friends during this difficult time.”

More to come.
