A gas leak in downtown Hanover resulted in a power outage affecting roughly 3,200 people on Saturday night, according to officials.
Firefighters had been called to a gas leak inside of a building on the 100 block of Frederick Street in downtown Hanover Borough around 7:42 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 8, 2025, according to York County 911 records.
In a release, Hanover Area Fire & Rescue said that emergency crews working at the scene of the natural gas leak had requested the electrical utility to shut down power to the building.
Due to the nature of the grid in the downtown area, Met-Ed had to shut down a section of the grid remotely until a technician could respond to the scene and isolate the power shutoff to just the affected building.
The Met-Ed power outage tracker reported that around 9:02 p.m. roughly 3,150 customers in Penn Township and Hanover Borough were without power, with an estimated restoration time of around 11 p.m. on Saturday night.
By 9:17 p.m., Met-Ed reported that power had been restored to all but roughly 18 customers.
On the scene around that time, firefighters were working to ventilate high readings of natural gas that had been detected inside of a building.
No injuries were reported.
Utility crews from Columbia Gas and Met-Ed were assisting on the scene.
Fire police were requested from several agencies to assist Hanover units with controlling traffic at several downtown intersections while power was out, including Pleasant Hill Volunteer Fire Department, Southeastern Adams Volunteer Emergency Services, Alpha Fire Company of Littlestown, and United Hook and Ladder.
