DJ Tim Westwood Faces Court Over Rape and Sexual Assault Charges

DJ Tim Westwood is set to make his first court appearance regarding multiple allegations of rape and sexual assault that span over three decades. The 68-year-old former BBC Radio One presenter has been accused by several women, all of whom claim they were victimized in their late teens and early 20s.
The charges against Westwood include 15 counts, with allegations dating from 1983 to 2016. Court documents indicate that he is accused of indecently assaulting a victim three times at BBC Studios during the 1990s. In addition, he faces serious accusations of rape at a London hotel and sexual assault at a music festival in the city.
The allegations detail a range of inappropriate behaviors, including kissing alleged victims without consent, groping, and forcing himself upon them. Westwood faces nine counts of indecent assault, two counts of sexual assault, and four counts of rape.
Originating from Suffolk and the son of an Anglican Bishop, Westwood joined BBC Radio One in 1994 to present a rap show. He quickly became one of the channel’s prominent figures, continuing his role on both Radio One and 1Xtra until his departure in 2013. His upcoming appearance at Westminster Magistrates’ Court marks a significant moment, particularly as the BBC navigates its own internal challenges, including recent controversies that led to the resignation of its Director General.

The charges are the result of a lengthy investigation conducted by the Metropolitan Police. According to their findings, Westwood is accused of a series of assaults that includes indecently assaulting a 17-year-old girl in Fulham in 1983 and sexually assaulting a woman in her 20s in Vauxhall in 1986. Further allegations involve him raping and sexually assaulting teenagers and women during various incidents, culminating in accusations of offenses committed as recently as 2016.
Following his departure from the BBC, Westwood briefly launched a show on Capital Xtra but was suspended amid the allegations. He has consistently denied any wrongdoing or inappropriate behavior throughout the years.
Tim Westwood has significantly influenced the UK rap and hip-hop scene since the 1970s, having been a prominent figure on various radio stations and credited with promoting emerging British artists. With accolades including several MOBO awards and hosting the UK version of MTV’s “Pimp My Ride,” his contributions to music have been notable, making the current allegations particularly shocking within the industry.
