Morrisons Announces Further Store Closures Amid Operational Changes

In a significant shift in its operational strategy, Morrisons has announced plans to close numerous stores and underperforming locations as part of a broader restructuring initiative. This decision follows the closure of a number of high street branches throughout the past year, with a total of 145 sites marked for shutdown. The affected venues include 17 Daily Stores and 52 cafes, among others.
The closures have already made an impact in several communities, particularly in Birmingham, where the Great Barr store was permanently closed on April 16. Other locations slated for closure include cafes in Solihull and Stirchley, along with the Market Street Kitchen situated in Edgbaston. Additionally, Small Heath’s pharmacy is also expected to close, signaling further changes in service availability for local customers.
Morrisons’ Chief Executive, Rami Baitiéh, acknowledged the ongoing challenges faced by certain cafes and stores. He explained that while many Morrisons Café locations have a viable future, a minority are encountering specific local issues that make continued operation impractical. “In those locations, regrettably, closure and re-allocation of the space is the only sensible option,” he stated. Baitiéh emphasized the importance of adaptability as the supermarket modernizes its business model, indicating that some closures are necessary changes to address areas of the operation that are simply not economically viable.
As part of this organizational shift, Morrisons is exploring partnerships with third-party providers to enhance offerings in locations that are closing counters or cafes. While the total number of closures represents a relatively small portion of Morrisons’ extensive operations, the company is mindful of the disruption this will cause to employees. Baitiéh assured that the company plans to take care of affected staff through the forthcoming transitions.

A comprehensive list of Morrisons’ closures has been released, detailing stores, cafes, florists, and pharmacies shutting down in 2025. Some notable store closures include locations in Gorleston, Peebles, Shenfield, and Poole, all of which ceased operations on April 16. Meanwhile, the timeline for the closure of various cafes, florists, and pharmacies is yet to be determined, with several additional locations across the UK included in ongoing evaluations.
The restructuring efforts underscore the competitive pressures facing supermarkets in the evolving retail landscape, as consumer habits and market dynamics continue to shift. Morrisons is clearly focused on streamlining its business for long-term sustainability, even as it navigates the immediate impacts of these closures on communities and employees.
