Fans say forgotten Jason Statham film is ‘absolute banger’ and it’s on TV tonight

The Jason Statham film which propelled him to action stardom is broadcasting on television this evening, with fans declaring it an ‘absolute banger.’

Launched in 2002, The Transporter represented Statham’s inaugural portrayal of Frank Martin in what would become an unexpected trilogy. The picture features Statham as protagonist Frank, a British mercenary driver based in France, who becomes entangled in a human trafficking conspiracy.

Events escalate when an assignment goes wrong and he must rescue his female cargo whilst gradually revealing his compassionate nature.

Helmed by the late Hong Kong filmmaker Corey Yuen, the supporting ensemble includes Shu Qi, François Berléand and Matt Schulze. The Transporter generated $44million globally against a $20.5million budget, and as with most Statham pictures, audiences aren’t concerned with Oscar-calibre performances, they simply want excitement.

Nevertheless film critics weren’t entirely convinced by the feature, awarding it a modest 54% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, yet cinema enthusiasts have continued to champion it as one declared: “Absolute banger of a movie..”, reports the Mirror.

Awarding it 4.5 stars, one critic noted: “From the very first scene, The Transporter establishes itself as a masterclass in stylish, no-nonsense action. The Transporter is an absolute thrill ride from start to finish. With Jason Statham delivering a career-defining performance, expertly crafted action sequences, and a sleek, stylish presentation, this film is a must-watch for any action fan.

“It’s proof that a great action movie doesn’t need overcomplicated plots or excessive CGI-just a compelling lead, expertly choreographed stunts, and non-stop excitement. Even two decades later, The Transporter remains one of the best action films of its era. If you love fast cars, brutal fight scenes, and a no-nonsense action hero, this is a movie that absolutely delivers.”

Another said: “Packed with slick choreography, pulse-pounding car chases, and Statham’s magnetic charisma, this film doesn’t just deliver – it exceeds every expectation. The plot is lean and efficient, just like Frank himself: a professional driver with unbreakable rules and unmatched skills, thrown into a high-stakes mission that tests his moral code.

“Luc Besson’s influence as co-writer shines, blending style, grit, and unexpected heart. Every frame crackles with energy, from the jaw-dropping stunts to the sleek cinematography. Statham’s stoic charm and flawless action sequences cement his place as an action icon. The Transporter is a high-octane thrill ride that redefines cool.”

However, not all viewers were impressed, with one critic writing: “Can a move be braindead? The answer is yes.”

Another disgruntled viewer posted: “A complete waste of 90 minutes of your life. Basically, the movie is a series of Jason Statham stunts; which at times gave you a Budget Bruce Lee feel. At other moments, the beautiful girl, European backdrop and use of expensive cars, made it feel like a Bond Wanna Be film. In the end, it was neither Bond nor Bruce…just Bad!”.
