Our review of Captain America: Brave New World
What to think of Captain America: Brave New World, Marvel’s latest installment featuring the star-spangled superhero? First of all, you might say, isn’t a fourth Captain America movie a bit too much? Well, think again! And for good reason: thanks to the change of hero (we move from Steve Rogers to Sam Wilson with a new outfit and new abilities), it feels like a whole new saga. A breath of fresh air blows through the story and context of the film, which reshuffles the cards for an aging hero.
This feature film is more political, well-paced, and quite dynamic, with impressive fight scenes that aren’t overly complex in their execution (in short, they don’t get muddled, which is something that can be said about many superhero fights in this genre of film, which are sometimes a bit messy in these types of scenes). It’s moving at times, as well as funny. In general, scenes that tend towards emotion are immediately defused by a comical scene, which works here, even if it is a little rehashed.
This is one of the criticisms that can be levelled at the film: overall, despite its fast pace (there’s never a dull moment), the film is rather flat. There is little or no real suspense, and the plot is predictable… Nothing is particularly transcendent. Even the cameos, expected or otherwise, will not set the crowds alight. So maybe that’s not the point of the film, and maybe that’s also what makes it so strong, but when Marvel gets us used to this type of scene, we inevitably expect a little more. The post-credits scene is dispensable and tells us nothing we don’t already know about the future of the MCU.
The film does score some points, however, by attempting to link the universes together. The film thus ties in with Louis Leterrier’s 2008 film The Incredible Hulk(even if we’re not particularly convinced by this link, as the actors playing Bruce Banner changed between that film and Avengers, and nothing is explained about this, unlike the evolution of General Ross), and with The Eternals, and the mention (at last!) of the Celestial that appeared in the middle of the Indian Ocean. The film even allows itself the luxury of teasing the arrival of mutants with the appearance ofAdamantium, the metal covering Wolverine’s bones, which here comes from the Celestial’s carcass.
On the acting side, Harrison Ford shines, playing a Thaddeus Ross who is much more complex and interesting in his psyche than the one played by the late William Hurt. Anthony Mackie, true to form, leads his character with a firm hand, and the rest of the cast, although a little less present throughout the film, provides a solid foundation for the plot and the interaction between the characters.
So, nothing new on the horizon, but the film is pretty good overall and will ensure you have a good time in the theater. All that’s left is for you to make up your own mind.
