Broncos confirm young gun’s shock exit

Brisbane’s decision to sign Jonah Pezet has come at a cost with talented teenager Coby Black to leave the club at the end of the 2026 season, with the playmaker reportedly on his way to join the Raiders.

Black, 19, had been touted as Brisbane’s long-term halfback after some eye-catching performances in the lower grades including a staggering 46-point haul for Burleigh in the Mal Meninga Cup last year.

It’s why plenty of Broncos fans expected to see Black eventually replace current captain Adam Reynolds in the key playmaking position when he retired, but those plans have been scuppered after confirmation on Tuesday that 2026 would be his final season at the club.

The news comes two weeks after the Broncos announced that Pezet would be joining them in 2027 after he activated a clause to leave the Storm to play one year at the Eels before heading north.

The move has had a flow-on effect that will see one of the game’s most exciting youngsters leave Red Hill, with early reports that he’ll link up with the Raiders where he would likely partner Ethan Strange in the halves.

“Coby has come through our academy program from the age of 14 and has worked really hard to progress through to our NRL top squad,” Broncos general manager of recruitment and pathways, Simon Scanlan said.

“While we’re sad to see him leave, we thank him for his dedication and commitment and sincerely wish him every success as he takes the next step in his career.”
