Beauty pageant contestant shocks judges with death metal song (video)

A beauty pageant contestant is making international headlines after she shocked the judges with a death metal song.

Ignacia Fernández, a 27-year-old model and singer, competed in the Miss World Chile 2025 (Miss Mundo Chile) competition on Sunday. In the semifinal, she performed an original song from her Chilean progressive death metal band Decessus, accompanied by guitarist Carlos Palma.

According to Blabbermouth, the audiences and judges were surprised by her guttural vocals while wearing an elegant ball gown. One of the judges said he had never seen anything like it in a beauty pageant, but she still earned a standing ovation with video clips that have gone viral around the world.

“With a blend of elegance, authenticity, and rebelliousness, Ignacia made it clear that beauty can also be synonymous with talent, power, and originality,” one YouTube video said in Spanish.

Fernández was representing Chile’s Las Condes district with hopes of representing her country in the Miss Universe pageant. Her performance earned her a spot among the top 20 and will appear in the finals this Sunday, Nov. 9.

“I’m not trying to fit in. I’m trying to show myself as I am,” the beauty queen said in an interview after her performance.

Fernández formed Decessus in 2020 with Palma, drummer Martín Fénix and bassist Jaime Pepe. The band has performed with artists like Insomnium and Jinjer, appeared at festivals in Finland and Germany, and released several singles including “Dying Hope Blossoms,” “Dark Flames” and “The Hollow Descent.”

Fernández told Chilean newspaper Las Últimas Noticias that she was nervous about taking her music to the world of Miss Universe.

“Television lends itself to people making memes and making fun of you,” she told the publication. The song I sang is by my band. It’s my job, my life.”
