Behind the scenes of snow day decisions for school buses

The first bus cancellations of the 2025-26 school year were announced today following Peterborough’s first snowfall over the weekend.
Student Transportation Services of Central Ontario (STSCO) says safety is the top priority when deciding whether buses will run in winter weather.
To make those decisions, STSCO has an inclement weather team made up of representatives across the region, a process that CAO Roy Wierenga says begins early in the morning.

While buses can handle snow, other conditions are more dangerous, with Wierenga citing that slippery roads and freezing rain pose the biggest problems.

The decision must be made quickly so parents, schools, and media can be notified in time, and Wierenga says the call often comes down to the wire.

To stay informed throughout the school year, Wierenga says parents can visit the STSCO website and sign up to receive email alerts about delays and cancellations.
