Deluge of rain leads to flooding across NI amid Met Office warning

Areas affected include Hannahstown in west Belfast, with the weather also causing traffic delays across the city during the early rush hour.

Parts of east and south Belfast also experienced heavy volumes of rain gathering on the roads.

There was also flooding reported in Dundrum in Co Down, which impacted some bus services.

A yellow weather warning has been issued for Northern Ireland until 9pm on Tuesday.

The warning, issued on Monday, covers all six counties, Antrim, Armagh, Down, Fermanagh, Londonderry and Tyrone.

Forecasters said between 20mm and 30mm of rainfall fell over an 18-hour period, with higher ground such as the Mourne Mountains likely to have received more than 40mm.

A Met Office spokesperson said the rain “will arrive across Northern Ireland early on Tuesday morning, with some heavy bursts developing during the afternoon and evening before clearing later in the night”.

Throughout the warning the public are being advised to prepare for longer journey times and possible disruption to public transport.

Bus and train services could be affected, while motorists are urged to take extra care due to spray and flooding on the roads.

Some homes and businesses may also experience temporary flooding, and the Met Office has warned that power cuts and interruptions to other services are possible in a few areas.

Stronger winds are also expected along parts of the eastern coast, potentially adding to disruption.

Residents in at-risk areas are being encouraged to check if their properties could be affected by flooding and to prepare an emergency kit including torches, batteries and a mobile phone power pack.

The Met Office has urged people to stay updated on forecasts as weather warnings can change quickly.
