New Orleans firefighters contain two-alarm fire at former Navy base in Bywater

The New Orleans Fire Department contained a two-alarm fire overnight at the former U.S. Navy base in Bywater, firefighters said Tuesday morning.

At around 3 a.m. Tuesday, firefighters responded to a reported building fire at Poland Avenue & Chartres Street.

Upon arriving, firefighters saw a larger fire on the second floor of one of the buildings. A second alarm was requested before 4 a.m. as fighting the fire became more challenging, according to NOFD.

The fire was under control by 5:16, a.m., firefighters said. A total of 17 NOFD units and 46 fire operations personnel responded to the fire.

No injuries were reported and a cause of the fire had not yet been determined, according to NOFD.

Several people reportedly living in the abandoned base left the building as NOFD fought fought the blaze.

The blighted former base has long been touted as rife for renewal efforts. In March, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development approved a loan guarantee for part of the $166 million financing package to convert the main building into nearly 300 rent-subsidized apartments.
