Many businesses in the Halifax area will be closed on Tuesday to mark Remembrance Day to honour and remember Canada’s veterans.

Under Nova Scotia’s Remembrance Day Act, some retail businesses must be closed Nov. 11, including malls, big-box stores and grocery stores.

Exceptions to the act include drugstores, gas stations and retail stores with no more than three employees working at any one time.

Remembrance Day ceremonies are organized by the Royal Canadian Legion.

Free transit to veterans and military personnel

Halifax Transit is offering free transit to all veterans and military personnel and their accompanying family members on Nov. 11.

Veterans and military personnel wishing to use the free transit service are asked to be in uniform or display their military identification upon boarding.

The Halifax municipality said the offer extends to Halifax Transit bus and ferry services, as well as registered Access-A-Bus users.

Buses will pull over at 11 a.m. to pause for three minutes of silence to honour and remember those who served and continue to serve.

Halifax Transit buses and the Alderney ferry will be operating on holiday schedules on Nov. 11. The Woodside ferry service does not operate on holidays.

Most municipally operated rec centres closed

Most municipally operated recreation facilities will be closed on Nov. 11. Residents are encouraged to call ahead for operating hours and program information.

Free parking

On-street paid parking will be free on Nov. 11.

311 service

The 311 contact centre will be closed on Nov. 11 for full service. However, urgent calls can still be reported. Regular operating hours will resume on Nov. 12.

In-person customer service centres will be closed on Nov. 11. They will reopen with regular hours on Nov. 12.
