How to nominate a Detroit Free Press High School Athlete of the Week

Understanding our High School Athlete of the Week nomination process, submission method and deadlines.

It’s time to vote for the Detroit Free Press Buffalo Wild Wings Girls Prep Athlete of the Week.

This week’s poll features five players – four volleyball and one swimming – who had standout performances during the week of Nov. 2-8

Voting will be open until noon on Friday, Nov. 14.

Here are the nominees (listed in alphabetical order by last name):

Gabby DiVita, Grosse Pointe South, volleyball

DiVita and the Blue Devils won both of their games last week over Grosse Pointe North and Detroit Renaissance to advance to the regional semifinals. On offense, the Miss Volleyball candidate recorded 63 kills, averaging nine kills a set, and had a .426 hitting percentage across both games. On defense, she had 27 digs and four blocks.

Brenna Mirovsky, Oxford, volleyball

Oxford needed to play all five sets in both their victories last week against Lake Orion and Clarkston to win its first district title since 2002. Brenna Mirovsky, a junior outside hitter for the Wildcats, had a two-game total of 22 kills, 35 digs, three blocks and seven serving assists.

Kayla Nwabueze, Bloomfield Hills, volleyball

Nwabueze led Bloomfield Hills to the regional semifinals after a historic win over Bloomfield Hills Marian on Friday, Nov. 7. The senior hitter – also a Miss Volleyball candidate, had 35 kills, 13 digs and three aces in the team’s 3-1 victory on Wednesday, Nov. 5. In Friday’s match, she recorded 30 kills, 21 digs and two blocks.

Ashlyn Taylor, Gibraltar Carlson, swimming

The senior swimmer won two individual races during the two-day Downriver Leauge Championship event which began on Wednesday and led Carslon to a league title. Taylor set personal bests in both races, beginning with the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:02.21. She acheived her next personal best of the in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:18.79.

Eleanor Williams, Romeo, volleyball

Romeo entered the 2025 volleyball tournament unranked in Division 1 play, but that didn’t stop the team from upsetting No. 7 Utica Eisenhower on Thursday, Nov. 6, in a 3-2 victory. Romeo also defeated Auburn Hills Avondale on Tuesday, Nov. 3. Eleanor Williams, the team’s junior rightside hitter, recorded a two-game total of 35 kills, 21 digs, four blocks and five aces.
