Nominations Open for Detroit Free Press High School Athlete of the Week

Voting has opened for the Detroit Free Press Buffalo Wild Wings Girls Prep Athlete of the Week, spotlighting five outstanding high school athletes who delivered remarkable performances during the week of November 2-8. Fans and supporters are encouraged to cast their votes until noon on Friday, November 14.
The nominees, presented in alphabetical order by last name, include four volleyball players and one swimmer:
Gabby DiVita, Grosse Pointe South, Volleyball
Gabby DiVita has been instrumental in leading the Blue Devils to the regional semifinals, securing victories against Grosse Pointe North and Detroit Renaissance. A Miss Volleyball candidate, DiVita demonstrated her offensive skills with an impressive 63 kills, averaging nine kills per set, while maintaining a .426 hitting percentage. In addition to her offensive prowess, she contributed defensively with 27 digs and four blocks.
Brenna Mirovsky, Oxford, Volleyball
Brenna Mirovsky, a junior outside hitter for Oxford, played a crucial role in the Wildcats’ quest for their first district title since 2002. Her efforts were pivotal in two hard-fought matches against Lake Orion and Clarkston, where the team won in all five sets. Over the two games, Mirovsky recorded a total of 22 kills, 35 digs, three blocks, and seven serving assists.

Kayla Nwabueze, Bloomfield Hills, Volleyball
Kayla Nwabueze led Bloomfield Hills to the regional semifinals following a historic win over Bloomfield Hills Marian. Also a Miss Volleyball candidate, Nwabueze showcased her skills with a total of 35 kills, 13 digs, and three aces in a critical match before achieving 30 kills, 21 digs, and two blocks in a subsequent game, solidifying her team’s success.
Ashlyn Taylor, Gibraltar Carlson, Swimming
Senior swimmer Ashlyn Taylor played a key role in helping Carlson clinch a league title at the two-day Downriver League Championship. Taylor excelled in two individual races, achieving personal bests in both events. She set a time of 1:02.21 in the 100-yard backstroke, followed by another personal best of 2:18.79 in the 200-yard individual medley.
Eleanor Williams, Romeo, Volleyball
In an impressive showing, Eleanor Williams contributed significantly to Romeo’s volleyball team as they entered the 2025 tournament unranked but managed to upset the No. 7 seed, Utica Eisenhower, with a thrilling 3-2 victory. Williams, a junior right-side hitter, recorded a remarkable two-game total of 35 kills, 21 digs, four blocks, and five aces throughout the matches.

For those who missed the nomination deadline, it’s important to note that nominations are accepted through 10 a.m. on Mondays for performances from the previous week.
