Hit BBC TV Show Gets Netflix Movie

BBC’s hit crime thriller Luther is officially receiving another movie adaptation from Netflix, more than two years after Luther: The Fallen Sun was released. Production is expected to begin in February 2026.
“The new story sees a new wave of brutal, seemingly random murders hit London, with Luther secretly called back into service,” reads the initial logline. “But the dramatic question is, how can Luther save London when everyone on all sides seems to want him dead?”
What do we know about Netflix’s new Luther movie?
Golden Globe winners Idris Elba and Ruth Wilson are set to reprise their respective roles as detective John Luther and research doctor Alice Morgan in the new Luther movie. This is good news for the original show’s fans who missed Wilson’s character, especially when she wasn’t able to return for 2023’s The Fallen Sun. Elba and Wilson were last seen together in the show’s fifth and final season in 2019. In addition, Dermot Crowley’s police superintendent Martin Schenk is also returning in the untitled movie.
The new Netflix adaptation will once again be directed by Jamie Payne, who also previously directed episodes of the show and The Fallen Sun. The screenplay is written by series creator Neil Cross. It is produced by Elba and Gina Carter for 22Summers, Cross, Tim Lewis, and Chernin Entertainment.
“Neil has yet again created a wonderfully dark tale to bring us all back together,” Payne said in a statement. “It’s a true joy to be back on the streets of Lutherland with the supreme talents that are Idris Elba and Dermot Crowley. I am also thrilled to be reunited with the brilliant and dangerous Alice Morgan, played by the extraordinarily talented Ruth Wilson.”
Cross added, “Luther, Alice, and Schenk are more than characters to me, they’re family. I never stop wondering where they are, what’s become of them … and what horrors might be stirring in the shadows of London while Luther’s not around. So we decided to get together and find out what happens next.”
