This house of the Lord was first announced by President Nelson in October 2023. At that time, he spoke about the purpose of building temples around the world.
“The Lord is directing us to build these temples to help us think celestial,” he said. “God lives. Jesus is the Christ. His Church has been restored to bless all of God’s children.”
The temple will be built on a 7-acre site at Atekong Drive, Calabar, Cross River State, Nigeria. Plans call for a 26,000–square–foot, single-story temple along with patron housing, arrival facilities, and a meetinghouse.
Over 250,000 members in 840 congregations call Nigeria home. The country has one operating temple in Aba Nigeria. Two temples are under construction in Lagos and Benin City, and temples in Eket, Abuja and Uyo have been announced.
Temples of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints differ from meetinghouses or chapels where members and friends of the Church meet for Sunday worship services. Each temple is considered a house of the Lord, where Jesus Christ’s teachings are reaffirmed and families can be united for eternity. In the temple, Church members can seek peace and guidance, learn more about the purpose of life, men and women.
