Vivienne Westwood Jewelry: Celebrating a Fashion Icon’s Legacy

Vivienne Westwood’s influence extends far beyond conventional fashion. Her pioneering approach has continuously blurred the boundaries between fashion, art, and rebellion. Celebrating this legacy, the new book, Vivienne Westwood & Jewellery, published by Thames & Hudson, explores her impactful contributions to the world of jewelry for the first time.

Unveiling a Creative Legacy

Written by fashion critic Alexander Fury in collaboration with the Vivienne Westwood brand, the book delves into Westwood’s distinctive jewelry style. It features a range of iconic pieces, including safety-pin earrings, pearl chokers, and bondage-inspired designs. Each item reflects her unique blend of luxury and subversion, emphasizing that jewelry was not merely decorative for Westwood; it was a powerful means of expression.

The Symbolism of Jewelry

Andreas Kronthaler, Creative Director at Vivienne Westwood, highlights the significance of the designer’s creations. “Jewelry is powerful, and it can be loaded with meaning,” he states. The orb logo, representing heritage, unity, and progress, stands out as a testament to Westwood’s vision. He describes it as a jewel that encapsulates time—past, present, and future.

The publication contains an introduction by Fury and is organized into ten themed chapters, including:

Upcoming Exhibition

Alongside the book release, the Vivienne Westwood & Jewellery international exhibition will debut at Te Papa, the National Museum of New Zealand, in late 2024. This exhibition presents Westwood’s jewelry in conjunction with her iconic garments, creating an immersive experience through sound, video, and catwalk imagery.

After its Shanghai run in July 2025, the exhibition will continue to tour globally across Asia, the USA, and Europe. This will allow audiences around the world to engage with Westwood’s multifaceted legacy.

A Lasting Impact

Since launching her King’s Road boutique in 1971, Westwood has transformed the role of jewelry in fashion. Her use of unconventional elements, such as chains and pearls, has introduced a rebellious spirit to traditional elegance. Vivienne Westwood’s creations remain bold, thought-provoking, and unmistakably British.

Vivienne Westwood & Jewellery encapsulates the essence of her work—daring yet refined, playful yet political. It offers a vivid glimpse into how Westwood turned jewelry into a compelling act of self-expression and storytelling. The book is now available at major retailers.
