Maine honors Veterans Day with parades, free meals, and ceremonies across state

Tuesday is Veterans Day, and communities across Maine are holding events to honor our men and women in uniform.
Here are some of the Veterans Day events and ceremonies taking place in Maine this year:
Aroma Joe’s
- In honor of Veterans Day, Aroma Joe’s is saying thank you to those who served with a free drink (any size up to 24 oz.) for all veterans on Tuesday.
Auburn
- Lotus Restaurant will be offering a free meal to Veterans on Veterans Day. This year, the restaurant is expanding the offering to include Active-Duty Military members as well. Lotus is open on Veterans Day from 11-10, and is located at 279 Center Street in Auburn. Those wishing to make reservations, or ask questions, can do so by calling (207) 241-0870. The buffet is free for Veterans on Veterans Day, although drinks, tax, and gratuity are not included.
Augusta
- VA Maine’s Veterans Day Celebration at 1 VA Center in Augusta at the flagpole outside Building 200 from 8 – 9 a.m. All are welcome.
Bangor-Brewer
- Veterans Day Parade begins on Vista Way in Brewer at 10:15 a.m. from Vista Way, it proceeds down Wilson Street to the Joshua Chamberlain Bridge. It crosses the Joshua Chamberlain into Bangor. Once in Bangor, it turns onto Main Street toward State Street/West Market Square. Continues down State Street toward Exchange Street. It then turns onto Exchange Street where it will end.
- 50 years After the Vietnam War: Program of Remembrance & Reflection will be presented by the St. John’s Episcopal Church at 225 French Street in Bangor from 3pm – 5pm. A reception will follow.
Bath
- Ceremony hosted by the American Legion Post 21 at Oak Grove Cemetery from 11am – 1pm, lunch will be prepared and served by the local Girl Scouts following the ceremony.
Biddeford
- The communities of Biddeford and Saco are invited to come together on Tuesday to honor and celebrate the brave men and women who have served in the U.S. military. The day begins with a short opening ceremony at 9:30 a.m. in Mechanics Park in Biddeford, followed by the parade stepping off at 10:00 a.m. Event ends at CK Burns School Park for closing ceremony.
Bowdoin
- Veterans Day Ceremony at 23 Cornish Drive in Bowdoin from 12pm – 1pm.
Brunswick
- Ceremony will take place at Brunswick High School’s “The Rock” Memorial from 11am – 12pm.
Caribou
- Ceremony to honor Veterans Day to be held at Northern Maine Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery at 37 Lombard Road in Caribou from 1pm – 2pm.
Castine
- Ceremony at the Field House at Maine Maritime Academy in Castine at from 7:10 a.m., followed by free lunch and cake for veterans in the Alfond Student Center at 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Falmouth
- Veterans and their families are invited to a luncheon following the ceremony provided by the Falmouth Lions Club at 65 Depot Road from 11am – 12pm.
Great Clips
- On Tuesday, veterans and active military members can receive a free haircut or a free haircut card to use later at Great Clips salons in Falmouth, Auburn, and Topsham. Non-military customers can also participate by getting a haircut that day and receiving a card to pay it forward to a service member.
Hallowell
- Coffee and donuts available prior to the ceremony at 9:30 a.m. at the Post Hall located at 114 Second Street, Hallowell. Ceremony to be held at 27 Water Street, Hallowell from 11am – 12pm.
Holden
- Ceremony to be held at 570 Main Road in Holden from 2pm – 3pm. Ceremony will feature guest speaker, Doc Goodwin of the Maine Veterans Project.
Lewiston
- Governor Janet Mills will provide remarks at 10 a.m. at the annual Lewiston-Auburn Veterans Council Veterans Day Ceremony on Tuesday. The full Veterans Council event, which runs from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., will feature music, a free lunch for veterans, remarks from former U.S. House Veterans Affairs Committee Ranking Member Mike Michaud, and a memorial dedication at Veterans Memorial Park. The event is at the Lewiston Armony at 65 Central Avenue. The PURPLE BUS is providing free transportation to veterans.
Milo
- Doors open at 15 Harris Pond Road at 11:00 a.m. and POW/MIA ceremony begins at 11:45 a.m. Dinner begins at 12:00 p.m. by the Penquis Valley High School Key Club.
Portland
- The Veterans Day Parade will assemble at Longfellow Square at 10AM and then proceed down Congress Street starting at 10:30AM, ending at City Hall at approximately 11AM with a ceremony & speeches to follow.
Presque Isle
- Free supper at 508 Main Street in Presque Isle from 5pm – 6pm for all military veterans, current military service personnel, and their spouses. Will feature moose meat donated by the Maine Warden Service and trout donated by Mi’kmaq Farms.
Richmond
- A Veterans Day Luncheon is being hosted by the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 132 at 55 Carding Machine Road in Richmond from 11:30am – 1:30pm. Enjoy a hot bowl of soup, maybe some chop suey or a hot dog and beans, and don’t forget the desert.
Rumford
- The Rumford American Legion Post 24 along with the Rumford VFW will host an annual Veterans Day Ceremony at 184 Congress Street from 11am – 12pm. A light lunch will follow.
Sanford
- A wreath will be placed at the Veterans’ Memorial in Central Park across from Sanford City Hall at 9 a.m. Ceremony, prayer, taps, and a rifle salute. At 10:30 a.m., there will be a gathering in the Memorial Gym.
Sidney
- A ceremony will begin with a wreath laying ceremony at the monument site in front of the town hall at 2986 Middle Road at 11 A.M. This will be followed by a short program in the Grange Hall.
Skowhegan
- Music for Military event will include numerous veterans’ organizations, free lunch, free haircuts, auctions, raffles, live music and more. Event is at 21 Silver Street from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
South Paris
- Veterans Day Ceremony & Resource Fair at Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School in South Paris from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. It’s hosted by the American Legion Foster-Carroll Post #72 & Veterans of Foreign Wars Floyd Harlow, Jr. , Post 9787. Presentations will be shown from the Maine Bureau of Veterans’ Services, Veterans Benefits Administration, Martin Point, and Health Affiliates of Maine. Learn more about special programs such as Honor Flight Maine, Quilts of Valor, Boothbay V.E.T.S. and Veterans Upward Bound. Refreshments will be provided.
South Portland
- The South Portland War Veterans Memorial Association presents the Veterans Day Parade on Tuesday. The parade starts at the SMCC lot and runs along Broadway to Mill Creek. Step off is at 10:30 AM.
Southport Island
- Annual celebration honoring our nation’s veterans at Southport Memorial Library from 10:45am – 12pm.
Waldoboro
- Local veterans from Waldoboro will be on hand to participate in a Veterans Day Celebration from being guest speakers, ringing the bell and presenting the Colors of our Country. Event being held at 116 Main Street in Waldoboro from 10:45am – 11:30am.
Waterville
- Parade & Ceremony to be held from 11am – 12pm. Parade route: Front Street to Appleton Street to Main Street to Castonguay Square. Followed by a free lunch at Winslow VFW for veterans and guests.
Weld
- Potluck style lunch will be provided by the Weld Recreation Committee members at the Weld Town Hall at 23 Mill Street from 12pm – 2pm. All are welcome. The event will feature a Korean War Veteran speaker, music, lunch, refreshments, and camaraderie.
Westbrook
- Veterans Day ceremony on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Woodlawn Cemetery Veterans Rest.
