Things are looking up under Ruben Amorim, with United one point off fourth placed Sunderland after 11 games with a new-look team.
United legend Rooney noted that recent arrivals such as Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha have been better after huge sums of wasted money previously on ‘big names’.
He named THREE misguided signings that cost the club a cool £164million combined – and was a team-mate of all of them!.
Rooney reckons £75m Romelu Lukaku, Paul Pogba, who cost £89m for his return, and, perhaps more controversially, the free transfer of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, were symptomatic of the club’s approach.

Speaking on The Overlap, he said: “The recruitment before that was horrendous wasn’t it?
“They were just bringing names in – you look at Lukaku, Zlatan, Pogba – they’re good players but they were just bringing names in and spending enormous amounts of money.
“It’s going to take a bit of time to actually get over those mistakes.”
Rooney is more optimistic about his old club now.

He added: “When you look at what has happened at Manchester United over the last ten years, for some of the players, they have been absolutely battered.
“Now they’ve got a couple of results, and you can see a bit of confidence coming back.

“The manager as well, he’s needed the results for himself. You can see a bit more confidence.
“They’re gradually getting better, there’s definitely been some improvement.
“I think we are seeing them improve and players are getting to know each other a bit better.
“I would still like to see Bruno [Fernandes] further up the pitch. I would like to see that.

“January will be interesting to see if they can get players to come help give that little push to try get into Europe or the top four or five for the Champions League.
“Gradually, we are starting to see better signings. You have to be realistic and say ‘are they going to win the league?’ No, they are not.
“Can you possible sneak into the top four or five? We are gradually seeing an improvement.”
