Indiana basketball wins vs Marquette: Insider thoughts, analysis

Tucker DeVries took over the first half, and Lamar Wilkerson the second half. Here are IndyStar IU insider Zach Osterman’s thoughts.

Indiana basketball (2-0) returns to Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall to host Milwaukee (2-1) on tonight, Nov. 12. The Hoosiers are coming off a win over Marquette highlighted by impressive offensive performances from Tucker DeVries and Lamar Wilkerson.

We will have score updates and highlights throughout, so remember to refresh.

IU 26, Milwaukee 21, 8:32 left 1H: IU is 5-of-8 on 3-pointers, Milwaukee 3-of-6. Milwaukee’s Amar Augillard makes 3s on consecutive possessions. Nick Dorn makes his IU debut and makes a long 2.

IU 19, Milwaukee 8, 12:24 left 1H: Lamar Wilkerson has a pair of 3s, and Trent Sisley adds two more. Timeout, Panthers.

Sam Alexis, fresh off the bench, has 2 fouls at the 13:48 mark. He heads back to the bench.

Indiana 8, Milwaukee 6, 15:29 left 1H: Lamar Wilkerson’s 3-pointer gives IU an 8-6 lead. Milwaukee leads 6-5 at the 17:05 mark on a Faizon Fields layup.

Tayton Conerway, Conor Enright, Lamar Wilkerson, Tucker DeVries, Reed Bailey

Junior forward Nick Dorn is expected to play Wednesday night against Milwaukee, IndyStar confirmed.

Dorn, an Elon transfer, has yet to appear in any competitive setting for Indiana, having spent the offseason and preseason recovering from a procedure to correct a Jones fracture in his foot. Dorn averaged 15.2 points and 3.8 rebounds per game with the Phoenix last season.

A 6-foot-7 wing/forward, Dorn’s anticipated return lends Darian DeVries’ team badly needed depth. The Hoosiers have been limited to just an eight-man rotation by injuries, with guard and wing spots both affected. IU will hope Dorn’s return starts a wider return to health for DeVries’ roster.

Which IU player, besides Tucker DeVries and Lamar Wilkerson, is due for an offensive breakout?

Zach Osterman, IndyStar: “Tayton Conerway is probably best described as Indiana’s third scoring option right now, and its top creator. But the more Tucker DeVries and Lamar Wilkerson display the volume scoring they’ve posted through IU’s first two games, the less willing defenses will be to sag off them, or cheat toward the line to stop Conerway’s dribble penetration. That means more of Conerway in the lane, and at the rim, and getting fouled, all ways in which he can pile up points fast. He won’t have as many big scoring nights as the other two, but he will make a fair few opponents suffer.”

Michael Niziolek, Herald-Times: “Sam Alexis has put up impressive numbers (15.0 points and 6.5 rebounds per game) off the bench. With Milwaukee coming into Bloomington with some size in the frontcourt, Alexis could be in line for big minutes. The playing time combined with his aggressive nature on the offensive end make him a strong candidate to score 20 or more points for just the fourth time in his career.”
