Aussies dazzled by light show … and you can see it again tonight

Australians have been dazzled by a stunning display of the southern lights overnight, as the aurora australis danced across skies around the country.

From Tasmania to Victoria and as far north as southern Queensland, stargazers stayed up late on Wednesday night to catch the colourful glow painting the horizon in shades of pink, purple and green.

Many shared breathtaking photos of the phenomenon, flooding social media feeds early Thursday morning.

If you missed the show on Wednesday, there is still a chance to catch it again on Thursday night.

The British Geological Survey said coronal mass ejections from the sun may trigger the most powerful solar storm to hit Earth in more than 20 years.

Observational astronomer Professor Michael Brown from Monash University said the latest coronal mass ejection reached Earth around lunchtime Thursday, sparking bright auroras visible across North America.

“There is a chance the activity will continue and auroras will be visible tonight in Australia,” he told 7NEWS.com.au.

However, Brown warned the lights may not appear as far north as they did on Wednesday night.

“Auroras are quite fickle so it is possible they will be visible tonight or we may see next to nothing,” he said.

As always, the best chance to spot them is from a dark location away from light pollution, with a clear view of the southern horizon, Brown said.
