World Cup qualifying, 5pm Thursday
Some people’s hearts sink at the prospect of another international break but Iceland have treated their supporters to some thrilling matches in World Cup qualifying Group D.
They took a shock lead against favourites France at the Parc des Princes before losing 2-1 in September and claimed a 2-2 draw with Les Bleus in last month’s return fixture.
That draw followed a chaotic 5-3 home defeat to Ukraine in which Fiorentina forward Albert Gudmundsson scored twice and hit the woodwork for Iceland.
They started their qualifying campaign with a 5-0 rout of Azerbaijan and should be backed for another entertaining win when they make the long trip to Baku.
Azerbaijan are bottom of the group after conceding 11 goals in four games and their winless run in 2025 looks set to continue.
