Aemet updates the weather forecast for the Canary Islands: heavy rain to continue as strong winds sweep the archipelago

The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has updated its forecast for Thursday, confirming that heavy rain and strong winds will continue to affect the Canary Islands as the effects of Storm Claudia persist.

Tenerife and western islands

The day will begin with overcast skies and moderate rainfall, which could be locally heavy or very heavy in the early hours, occasionally accompanied by thunderstorms. Rain is expected to be persistent in inland eastern areas, as well as the midlands of Anaga and the north-west of Tenerife.

As the day progresses, showers will continue in northern areas, while clearer skies will gradually appear elsewhere across the island by the afternoon.

  • Temperatures: Slight drop in maximums, with highs around 24°C in Tenerife and lows near 15°C in El Hierro.
  • Wind: Blowing from the southwest, increasing from moderate to strong, with very strong gusts—especially on mountain peaks and in southern and western midlands, where gusts may exceed 90 km/h. Conditions are expected to ease later in the afternoon, with winds shifting westward.

Gran Canaria

Cloudy to overcast conditions will dominate, with moderate rainfall that could be persistent in some areas. There is also a risk of heavy or locally very heavy thunderstorms, particularly in the south-west and mountainous areas facing that direction, and occasionally in the north-west and south-east.

Rain will begin to ease later in the day, giving way to widespread clear spells during the second half of the afternoon.

  • Temperatures: Slightly lower maximums, steady minimums.
  • Wind: From the southwest, moderate to strong, with possible gusts up to 90 km/h on peaks and exposed slopes. Winds will weaken and veer to westerly later in the day.

Lanzarote and Fuerteventura

The easternmost islands will also experience cloudy skies and moderate rain, with a chance of heavy or very heavy thunderstorms, especially in the morning and around midday.

  • Temperatures: Maximums slightly lower, minimums steady or slightly rising.
In Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, temperatures will range between 20°C and 25°C.
  • Wind: From the southwest, moderate to strong, with very strong gusts possible in northern and eastern highlands, locally reaching 90 km/h. Winds will ease later, shifting to moderate westerly in the afternoon.

Aemet advises residents and visitors to remain alert for continued heavy rainfall and strong gusts, particularly in mountainous and coastal areas, and to follow any additional guidance issued by the emergency services as Storm Claudia moves slowly eastward across the archipelago.
