It was not Cristiano Ronaldo’s evening. He and the Portuguese team went into halftime trailing 0-2 against Ireland. The comeback must now be attempted by the star ensemble without their biggest name.
CR7 got involved in a scuffle over the ball, leading to an action that, after review by the VAR, was deemed worthy of a straight red card.
Initially, Ronaldo only saw a yellow card, but then referee Glenn Nyberg decided on a dismissal after viewing the video footage. The TV images showed Portugal’s superstar striking backward with his elbow, hitting opponent Scales on the back.
Before the VAR informed the referee, Ronaldo provoked the Irish defender with the “crybaby” gesture. He then had to endure this gesture from the Irish fans shortly after. CR7 responded to the dismissal with sarcastic applause and both thumbs up. He clearly could not comprehend the referee team’s decision.
