AFC Toronto to split 2026 season between BMO Field and York Lions Stadium

Everybody wants to play at a World Cup venue.

AFC Toronto announced on Thursday that the Northern Super League club will split home matches in 2026 between York Lions Stadium and BMO Field. The press release did not specifically state how many matches would be played on the Exhibition Place grounds.

The dual-venue approach will see York Lions Stadium accommodate matches during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with marquee fixtures scheduled at BMO Field before and after the tournament, signalling a major step forward for the club’s ambition and more proof that getting fans up to the York University campus is a struggle.

With a third football team calling BMO home, it will be a busy year. The CFL’s Toronto Argonauts will play three home games outside of Toronto due to the World Cup games being hosted by BMO Field from June 12, 2026, to July 2, 2026. The Argos will play one in Regina’s Mosaic Stadium against the Roughriders, another at Hamilton Stadium against the Tiger-Cats and against the Blue Bombers in Winnipeg at Princess Auto Stadium.

AFC Toronto’s move comes on the heels of the club capturing the inaugural NSL Supporters’ Shield in their debut season and booking a berth in Saturday’s Final at BMO Field after a dominant 6-1 aggregate semi-final win over Montreal Roses FC.

In announcing the new home venue model, AFC Toronto CEO Helena Ruken stressed the club’s commitment to growth.

“Our game and our community keep growing, and this move is about matching that ambition — giving our players and supporters a bigger stage to stand on. We are inviting everyone in this city to help shape what comes next and to build our legacy together, on and off the pitch.”

The NSL club has already placed 2026 season memberships on sale, offering fans priority access to seating, exclusive events, early playoff ticketing, and preferred pricing across both venues.

“The inaugural season for the Northern Super League and AFC Toronto has been a tremendous success, and it is a testament to the promising future for women’s professional sports in Toronto,” said Chris Shewfelt, MLSE Vice President of Business Operations. “Expanding AFC Toronto’s schedule at BMO Field next season, and helping to grow the exposure for the club, is an important part of that future and MLSE is proud to play a role in supporting the team and its fans.”

AFC Toronto’s first season began with over 14,500 fans at BMO Field, creating a landmark atmosphere for the NSL’s debut. The club secured the Supporters’ Shield with a 16-3-6 record. Montreal were no match in the semis.

On Saturday, AFC Toronto will face Vancouver Rise FC in the inaugural NSL Final at BMO Field, with the chance to cap off a remarkable first campaign with a championship.
