A gritty Week Ten performance against the Cleveland Browns helped the New York Jets secure consecutive victories last weekend, but the boys from the Big Apple could be brought back down to earth with a bump on Thursday.
The Jets’ special teams deserved most of the praise against Cleveland, securing kick-off and punt returns for touchdowns to establish a 14–7 first-quarter lead, an advantage they clung on to despite being comprehensively outgained on offence.
After trading away three major pieces of their defence last week, the Jets sacked Cleveland quarterback Dillon Gabriel six times as the Browns’ offence mustered only a measly four yards per play on average.
While the Jets’ defence is definitely capable, their offence is still a concern. It’s the main reason why the markets have little faith in Aaron Glenn’s men, who face a much tougher test against the New England Patriots.
The Pats were the underdogs in Tampa Bay last week, on the assumption that the Buccaneers would prove too strong coming off a bye week.
However, while quarterback Drake Maye was not at his best, New England still produced multiple big plays to run out 28–23 winners. Their defence was particularly impressive, holding off three Bucs’ drives when they were only up by one score in the fourth quarter.
Maye and his colleagues have been exemplary since the end of September, beating the handicap line in six of their past seven outings.
Mike Vrabel’s new-look squad will likely take a backward step at some stage, but this isn’t the week to take them on.
The Jets’ offensive unit lacks any real thrust and New York could be grounded by a confident Patriots in Foxborough.
